View Full Version : Best blocking software?

I'd like to get a blocking program on my laptop, especially given the fact that I'm thinking of getting a second laptop for my hubby who's going to begin traveling for a new job he's taking. But, based on some stuff he's had to deal with in the past, I'd like to have a blocking program on there so he can't access certain sites.
Do you have any recommendations? I know there's a lot out there, but I need to make sure that they'll work on my network at home, and probably on Apple machines as well as Windows based stuff since I'm considering getting an Apple laptop to replace my Gateway.

Hedgebuilders has worked great for us. I like it because it is not software that becomes obsolete, but it is a company that is constantly blocking new sites. If one gets through, you just submit it for review. It is very strict, not even allowing utube or my space, but it all depends on what you want. It also has an accountability feature so that you can see when someone is trying to access blocked sites or trying to uninstall it, which to do that you need a password from Hedgebuilders which is only good for twenty four hours. The down side is that there is a monthly fee, but it is one of the best that I have seen. www.hedgebuilders.com

There's a world in what you're not exactly saying. On the one hand, my favorite 'blocking' mechanism is the personal will (or, in this case, the 'won't').
Steele: Sergeant, what's the meaning of this?
[Thinking he's talking about the unauthorized pig picking]
"Hoot": Just a little aerial target practice, sir. Didn't want to leave 'em behind.
Steele: I'm talking about your weapon, soldier. Now Delta or no-Delta, that's still a hot weapon. Your safety should be on at all times.
[He holds up his index finger and bends motions as if squeezing a trigger and then walks off]
"Hoot": This is my safety, sir.
Sanderson: Let it alone, sir. He hasn't eaten in a few days.
However, if that's been an issue before, perhaps a better blocking mechanism could be something as simple as being transparent with a brother in Christ and allowing his History to be an open book when he returns home. Accountability can be a great deterrent if all you need is a little push to keep one's thought-life on the straight-and-narrow.

Dave Ramsey has some links on his site I think it's called. Besafe.com I think is the name of the program. I kind of agree with Phy you need one of those things that hooks to your lap top that will show you what he's looking at. That way he can know you are seeing what he is seeing. Not sure what you call that program.

Thanks! I try to make a point to go in and randomly check his history--he has no idea how to clear it, and if he does, it affects some other things on my computer, so I know he was looking at something he shouldn't be.
I had a program after the blow-up last year for a while--a trial or something, but it was like $60 a year, and it kept trying to block some of the threads on CW (can't remember why) and it was a pain to remember the password to get around it. /sigh Fortunately, I know way more about computers than he does. He seems to be intimidated by anything much more complicated than e-mail (he kept asking me last night how to put a link to a Travelocity site in his e-mail--like 4 times or something.)
