View Full Version : Celtic Rock?

I'd really like to find some traditional Celtic tunes meshed with a solid rock sound. You know... drums and electric guitars... something loud and pulsing but still maintaining the Celtic undercurrent. I've looked around, but I've yet to come up with anything even close. Anybody know of a group that does something along these lines?

Clannad and the Corrs are as close as I can come...not exactly purist traditional, but genuinely Irish and definitely rockin'

I know bands that sing in Celtic languages - and loud bands that play celtic folk rock - but not what you're describing. Pulsing guitars. I'm going to have to think on this a bit.

Ohboyohboyohboy...

The Pogues (http://www.pogues.com/) - Started it all!
Flogging Molly (http://www.floggingmolly.com/) - Basically, the Mollys have taken the Pogues place as the kings of the Celt-punk movement.
Dropkick Murphys (http://www.dropkickmurphys.com/) - They've morphed into a more Celtic sound from their more traditional punk rock beginnings, but fans of the Pogues and Flogging Molly would certainly appreciate their newest work the most.
Black 47 (http://www.black47.com/) - Some bhoys from my home town! Great music, good guys, and they play around the city constantly.

Of course, I can't forget my boys...

Flatfoot 56 (http://www.flatfoot56.com/) - Yes, they were slated to play my wedding, but had to bow out due to contractual obligations. These guys are some of the most awesome believers I've met, and they've got a freakin' incredible band to-boot. I think they're the only band playing East Coast Oi! Fest and Cornerstone in the same year. Definitely give them a listen-to.

Gaelic Storm is really good. They were the steerage band on the movie "Titanic" and I was fortunate enough to see them perform a couple of months ago. They keep true to Celtic types songs/lyrics, etc ... but they do some in a really upbeat tempo.

Also, if you're interested, there's a good Celtic group that does Christian music ... Eden's Bridge. They aren't "rockin" but I love the Celtic style in a worship format.

I am a big fan of the UK band Iona, although they are probably not "rock" enough to meet your original desire.

Actually, I should have specified that what I'm really searching for is primarily instrumental music. But thanks for the further suggestions, Prof and Francine. I'll have to check them out too. :)

Iona is about half instrumental songs, maybe more on some albums.

Having looked Iona up on iTunes, I think I may have a few of their songs on some Celtic compilations.

I got to hear The Young Dubliners on the Early Show Saturday morning. They were a rockin' hoot.
