View Full Version : Why Do We All Hate and Fear 'Dem Liberals So Much?

So, yeah, seriously.
Why?

For me, it's not hate or fear. It's that I think they're dead wrong in ideology and direction.
To me, liberal means more invasive government, more expensive government, even more insane taxes, and a total abandonment of any morality this country has remaining. Liberalism, in my mind, equates with socialism and communism--and I'm not interested.
Don't get me wrong--I'm not completely thrilled with the route "conservatives" are taking in this country. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between the two sides. Still, a general rule is while both sides are a disappointment, the so-called conservatives are usually not as bent on a socialist/communist/humanistic direction.

What Rebecca said. Let me admit something: back in my misspent youth (1972) I was a McGovern campaign worker. The reason why boiled down to two main things he promised to do if elected: legalize drugs, and give every man, woman, and child in the US a thousand bucks. For a broke pot-head college kid like me, that was golden. Legalized drugs and free money to buy 'em? I'm in, baby.
And then...I got saved.
And slowly but surely as I started comparing the idealogies of liberalism (wealth distribution, free love, legalized narcotics, the whole laundry list) against the Word of God...I saw I'd been conned.
And then when abortion was legalized, and every liberal in the country fell utterly, completely, orgasmically in lust with the idea of killing the unborn ("now we really CAN screw with abandon!!"), the die was cast. I left that crazy way of thinking, and I've never looked back.

The problem with the evangelical-Republican nexus is that I found myself parroting political views that I didn't really buy, just because those political views were held by politicians who were also pro-life.
Then about 15 years I started wondering why I had to automitically be in support of big business, just because I was pro-life, or why I had to oppose increased funding for higher education because I was pro-life, or why I had to ... [ fill in some other plank from the Republican platform ] just because I was pro-life.
So I dumped the party affiliation, then the political label. My politcal prism (paradigm, to use a term from another thread) is now that of a libertarian-leaning, thinking Christian.
Some of the positions that fall out of that prism fit on the left, some fit on the right, and some fit nowhere at all.

This pretty much sums it up for me.

Yeah, Bekka said it pretty good. I would say I'm more of a libertarian now than anything. Oh, yeah, also...Liberalism is for children. No, you won't always be taken care of...no, someone won't always be there to hold your hand, but as an adult, you are much freer. I think people get afraid and then they start looking to the government to take care of everything. And government can work, but only if it's run by men and women who put their faith first in God. Otherwise, we're going to gradually become like the humanistic cultures in Europe. My uncle over in England tells me banana's have to be a certain length or they are taxed. Home gardens are no longer allowed, certain trees are allowed in the front yard, but not the back. His best friend died waiting to see a heart surgeon because you can't just 'go see' their government paid doctors....it runs the gamut of silly to serious.
Yeah, it's not always easy, but I'd rather take my chances and live free...or well, under the circumstances...as free as possible.
