I became a Christian in the 80s, and dj-ed a christian rock show on the college station, so I have a nostalgia for the rock, metal, alternative of that era: Adam Again, Altar Boys, Barnabas, Bloodgood, the Choir, Crashdog, Crumbacher, Daniel Band, Jerusalem, the Lead, Mad at the World, One Bad Pig, Rez, 77s, Steve Taylor, Tonio K, Tourniquet, Undercover, White Cross.
Since then, I've dug the great celtic christian band Iona, as well as Rock N Roll Worship Circus, Soul Junk, and the Violet Burning.
Currently, I dig the Wedding, Rocket Summer, Hawk Nelson, Mute Math, Relient K, and Sanctus Real.

Sure, I like what Tooth & Nail records is doing, and liked what GU did with the Anchor Fellowship CD. Anchor Fellowship had a tent at Cornerstone '07 that I spent much quality time at, and see that Anchor is doing much good work in Nashville.

This is off the "norm" but I love Iron Maiden. If you know the facts about the band they are actually very good. The drummer is born again and they are all drug free. The lead singer is incredibly established in the professional world and is even a pilot for one of the larger English airlines.

I never figured how "The Number of the Beast" could be construed as glorfuing Satan... It's essentially just a poetic explanation of his doom as foretold in Revelations.
Anyway, yeah, Iron Maiden rocks. ;) :D

Tourniquet and White Cross I've heard of and I like some of their music but I was surprised that I didn't see Petra in that list. My older brother was all about White Cross and Petra. Use to drive me nuts listening to their music all the time.
Personally I like anything instrumental. Lots of classical music such as Mozart and Bach. I also like bluegrass and anything else that has words that are decent, you can understand the words being sung, and the music has to have a good beat to it.
Okay. I'm really not all that picky, but if it has to be played loud and I can't understand the words, to me it's not worth listening to.

Petra was good, I saw them play a few times. They were a little mainstream, so I left 'em off the list.
On classical/instrumental, I am a Wagner fan ... can't take the full operas, but I have a few CDs of "Wagner Without Words" -- tremendous.

Oh boy. Since I’ve started writing, my gentle obsession with music has had to take a back seat. Still, I have plenty of music history to list favorites. Without going into a musical history that is ecclectic to the extreme, I’ll just say that my exposure to music has been from all directions - and probably always will be.
Of albums, these, so far, are my longest lasting favorites:
Abbey Road, The Beatles
The Village Green Preservation Society, The Kinks
Kind of Blue, Miles Davis
Created to Worship, Rita Springer
Arthur;the Rise and Fall of the British Empire, The Kinks
The White Album, The Beatles
International Velvet, Catatonia
The Joshua Tree, U2
How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, U2
Songbird, Eva Cassidy
Crimson and Blue, Phil Keaggy
Essential Mozart
Mozart’s Requiem
Requiem for a Dream, Kronos Quartet (these guys rock)
Calico Skies, Paul McCartney
The Best of ELO
Essential ChieftainsNickel Creek, Nickel Creek
Stealing Second, Chris Thile
Not All Who Wander are Lost, Chris Thile
Beyond Nature, Phil Keaggy
Takin’ it to the Streets, the Doobie Brothers
One More Song for You, the Imperials
So You Wanna Go Back to Egypt, Keith Green
Dreamin’, Reba Rambo
You Gotta Go There to Get Back, Stereophonics
Creedance Cleerwater Revival, CCR
Gimme Fiction, Spoon
Want, Rufus Wainwright
Til the Sun Turns Black, Ray LaMontagne
The Best of Earth, Wind, & Fire
Forget About It, Alison Kraus
Take Me Away, Sarah Kelly
Everything by Roger MillerThe Four Seasons, Vivaldi
The essential Billy Joel
A Single Man, Elton John (weird choice I know - but I have my reasons)
The Soundtracks to the Lord of the Rings
Oh wow, this could go on and on and on and on!
I am currently discovering Maximo Park, Elvis Costello, Frank Zappa (Hot Ratz is pretty great), and Imogen Heap. I also love croonies (Doris Day, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin), and other classical composers that are essential to me: Corelli, Gustav Holst, Rachmaninov, and several others. I prefer chamber music these days, but Holst’s The Planets is still top of the charts for me.

Requiem for a Dream, Kronos Quartet (these guys rock)
A slight sidebar, but I have to ask... did you see the movie that went with this soundtrack?
Did you need therapy afterwards?
Cymrugirl
01-15-2008, 03:21 PM
Nope, didn't see the movie. I actually discovered Kronos Quartet via their other albums first, but this is my favorite album of theirs. I read enough reviews of that film to stay away from it. Sounds weird. And, just not interesting enough to spend a couple of valuable hours on.

Well, if you were a student of film, I'd be reccomending you see it.
As you aren't, you've probably made a very wise decision.

I somewhat suspect that the Cannes Film shown in Mr. Bean's Holiday slightly skewers that pscyhological forray. From what I've read, I could never decide if it sounded more experimental, intentional, or pretentious. I suppose I'll never know....

Aaronovsky's a bloody genius. That movie probably hits as hard as anything else on film. But this would be hijacking to continue this discussion...

Oh and wow, ForeverJoy, I just spotted your ode to Don Francisco. Very old school. I really love the era of Christian music when it was being recorded by secular labels. They were bringing in whole orchestras - brass - the works. Phil Keaggy's old albums from the sixties are stellar -even though his guitar skills were really still just getting warmed up.

I like Don Francisco a lot. And yes, I know he is ooooold school, but I don't mind. I've heard about Phil Keaggy, but never listened to any of his. I'll have to do that some time!

Oop - sorry, Forever. Yes, I meant you.
There's a secular artist that reminds me a bit of Don Francisco. Ray LaMontagne. His music actually has the kind of staticy noise you hear on old recordings from the seventies. If you didn't tell me it was new, I'd think it was recorded then. His first album particularly had a Francisco flavor.
Phil Keaggy's guitar piece Happy is brilliant, bluesy - and his older songs in which he's singing are still, to me, the best he ever wrote. I still pick Crimson and Blue as my favorite album of his just because he actual does so many Beatles sendups and throws in some pscyhadelic pieces that are just....awesome. The song Doin' Nothin' is just a great essay of sorts on media - and he screams and grinds his guitar just fantastically on it.....BUT if you buy a newer copy of the album, it's gone. I don't know why they took it off. My parents hated that song because it sounded so wild back when I first bought it, so maybe others felt the same? Anyway, his equally interesting Don't Pass Me By is still on there. But his biggest accomplishment really came with Beyond Nature - which is just a nod to the McCartney White Album song the whole thing is remniscent of - Mother Nature's Son. Very mellow - very extraordinary.
He's wonderful. His concerts are very unique. If you get a chance to see him play his music, I wouldn't pass it up. He's one of the best guitar players that have ever graced the stage, period, and watching him is similar to being in a trance.

Plumb is really just Tiffany Arbuckle, with a rotation of backing player, so there really is no "disbanding" possible ... it's just the one person for practical purposes. She seems to put out an album every couple of years, and do a few shows now and then, too.

Which Disciple – 'cos the rap-rock band Disciple isn't really too old-school, nor is the other Disciple I'm more familiar with (xDisciplex A.D.)...
I guess I'm sorta' confused... I hear old-school metal I think either Bloodgood and Stryper or the original Living Sacrifice.
