I used MP3.COM back in the day, when it was free.

The family all got iPods last year, and for Christmas we got iTunes cards, but I don't tihnk anyone's used them yet. I haven't used mine.

I typicall use iTunes, but I'm in the market for better, cheaper suppliers that actually use mp3s and other non-protected formats.

Besides, I don't like using Apple products. >_<

On the CW site, we had a discussion on the outrage of nations not respecting US copyrights for us authors, and how horrible that is .... keep that in mind if you choose LegalSounds, which is a Russian company and it is unclear how well they keep track of and pay royalties to the copyright holders.

Sorry for the buzzkill, dudes.

Sorry for the buzzkill, dudes.

I am use to you doing that, you seem to like to rag on my posts, you did that on CW as well and that is why I left.

It is the digital age ............I personally believe eventually copyrights will be a thing of the past. You can't stop countries that do not acknowledge our laws and expect them to be accountable. While I understand your point unless you can pull up something saying otherwise there is no reason for me to believe they are not properly paying royalties.

I know our govt has banned many sites that were breaking laws such as gambling, bit torrent and a cpl outside file sharing sites as well. It is fair to assume, seeing that legalsounds has been around for years, and the filesharing lawsuits have been flying, that if they were not paying out they would have been mentioned.

Side Note : AllofMP3.com was another Russian site that sold MP3's. Back in 11/06 the Russian Federation agreed to shut them down due to copyright infringement. They are quoted as saying ""Under the copyright laws of virtually every country in the world, including Russia, it is illegal to distribute recordings without the permission of the rights owners."

That being said and seeing how legalsounds is older than 11/06, it is fair to conclude that they do pay royalties.

Russian Law
Russian Copyright Law (ROMS) allows collecting societies to give out licenses for selling music without prior approval of every single right holder. A copyright owner however can ask to exclude music from these licenses on the condition that he can prove he owns the copyrights.

Copyrights and payments
The website selling the music has to pay 15% of their earnings to the collecting society. Roms probably has a lot of money waiting for Western artists, but since their record companies refuse to do business with these collecting societies, no money has been paid out so far.

So you decide ..................................... American ignorance ????

I'm gonna have to agree with you, Joe. With this company being in a different country they go by different laws.
Plus it is the company's responsibility to make sure the royalties and what not are taken care of.
As a consumer and someone strapped for cash I look for the best prices and if they have a better offer than someone else... well... I'm gonna use them.
Also it is quite unfair to this company to just assume that they wouldn't pay the proper royalties.

Leo and gang discussed AllofMP3 on TWIT for several months, as did the gang at cNet's Buzz Report--the problem with AllofMP3 is that the regulatory agencies within the Russian government couldn't even figure out where the money that was supposed to be distributed to the artists was actually going. And since both TWIT and the Buzz Report are known for being harshly critical of the RIAA and DRM-schemes used by Apple and Microsoft, as well as the high price of 99 cent / track music, I don't think they'd be critical of AllofMP3 if it were at all legit.

My opinion is, if you know the artists aren't getting paid--for whatever reason--then why even bother paying 9 cents per song? Just fire up limewire and download away.

As for the original question, I don't buy a lot of digital music online, though I did pick up Meiko's album on iTunes plus (256 kbps) and I've bought a few odd tracks through Amazon's mp3 download service. Typically, I buy used CDs and rip them myself.

Sorry, 50/50, it really is nothing personal.

I am not saying to not go with this Russian site, just the irony of it struck me after the outrage on CW about foreign countries not paying US royalties.

Just out of a golden rule vibe, as a creative person, I am not going to do it.

I would agree with you if there was a complaint in this country about it. Or if as I posted, back when there was the other lawsuit, if legalsounds was also mentioned, but they weren't. I wasassuming that they were "doing the right thing" and paying royalties since there was no mention of them and the site is up, running and has been around for years.

Maybe I am naive .....................

And apology accepted .................. maybe I took it the wrong way.

Maybe.

I certainly posted my strong feelings here (and at CW) regarding the content of your post(s) -- I'll keep doing that, with everyone's posts. I was picking on what you posted, but I was not specifically intending to pick on you for any particular personal reason.

Adidtional, for 50/50.

Note I have not gone after your opinions, or your theology, or your taste. I can let differences in those areas stand, and don't post responses to every difference in opinion, theology, or taste.

But I do have trouble letting facts that are incorrect (or incomplete) stand -- I am a university professor, so I tend to take out the red pen a lot. I correct spelling and grammar in LIBRARY books, to put it in perspective.

Anyway, the areas where I have "picked on" you have been where things have been posted (on Obama, foreign copyright provisions, divorced presidents ... ) where I thought there were factual concerns, as opposed to simply differences of opinion or interpretation. I can let differing opinions stand; that's what makes us all unique humans. But I do have trouble letting incorrect or incomplete facts stand. That's a distinction I make.

It's who I am, and it can be annoying. But at least I found a job where it works!

I'm not sure I'm the best person to comment on this particular subject.
I can't say I haven't partaken of the free file sharing on the net, on occasion (ok, a lot). I can say however, I finally realized that if I expect the bands that I love to survive and have to ability to perform for me and others on a stage, I have to support them.

Honestly, there was a time when I figured that if they were dumb enough to print albums that can be ripped...they deserved it? Haha, welcome to the world of sloppy justification.

:-\ What can I say? I'm young and I have a problem with rebellious behavior?

Other than that, I use iTunes.
