Anybody familiar with the story of John Titor?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Titor

In a nutshell, a message board user appeared in 1999 and claimed to be a time traveler from the year 2036. He then made a whole bunch of predictions to "prove" that he was who he said he was, with the caveat that he'd affected the space-time continuum by showing up here so his predictions might not happen.

Anyway, I've heard it was a publicity stunt for a POD novel. But there's something quite fascinating about the idea that so many people could believe something so far-fetched as a time traveling soldier from 2036 going back to 1999 to hang out and chat.

Any other web-lore like this that you guys find interesting?

Oh, WGJ... I've found myself in complete agreement with the main thesis behind SomethingAwful.com's existence for quite some time, namely, the internet makes us stupid.

Maybe it doesn't make us stupid, but it's a lot easier for us to see just how stupid so many people are. *SIGH*

For the moment, I don't have any weblore to share, but I did want to express my faith in humanity being eroded just a little more after learning about that guy and his following. Is it possible to have negative faith in mankind?
