Two questions
1. I was wondering if anyone has done an at-home Bible study...I mean on their own. Something you bought at the Christian bookstore. I have been in many Bible studies and wanted one for home use.
2. What is your most favorite study you have ever taken? Mine is Kay Arthur's study on covenant. Wow! Is that awesome! If you ever get the chance, take it! Life-changing!

My approach to devotional reading at home has changed over the years – I used to use daily bible notes from Scripture Union. I then wanted related information and acquired [in 1980!] the Lion History of Christianity and its companion Handbook. I started a library at our church and people lent it books for others to borrow – this was enlightening.
About ten years ago I bought cassettes of the Old Testament – I found I was neglecting it because of its size and because my eyes and brain could not handle it comfortably – this renewed the great OT passages in my memory, such as – ‘the word that God puts in my mouth; that shall I speak’ Numbers 22.38.
I like to read the New Testament in chunks, one reason is to get away from seeing Scripture as just a bunch of ‘proof texts’ – look at the bigger picture of what the writer is saying.
The existence of so many sects – some seemed heretical to me – made me want to study church history, there is an excellent public library in town and I use it a lot, for a small fee they also get me books to borrow that they do not have at that particular library. I bought the Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church and got other books of interest from the library that it mentioned. The world Church is massive and varied. Just an example – Photius the ninth century Patriarch of Constantinople is fascinating – he opposed the Roman claim to be the centre of unity for Christianity and preferred the Greek conception of area Patriarchates of almost equal status. I think this gives a pointer for possible and worthwhile greater church unity.
In answer to your interesting question I suppose it is 'subjects' that I pursue and from them glean spiritual nourishment.

Beth Moore's Bible Studies are pretty good. Though I think her newer ones are better than the older ones.

Derby, You sound like me. I love to dig. I love, love, love digging into the OT. We overlook so much when we confine ourselves to the NT. I love studying by subjects and by researching the meanings of words.
I know Beth Moore's studies are wonderful but I wasn't sure if you could do one by yourself at home. Have never bought one of hers. However, I did start one at our church but didn't get to finish it.
Thanks you two. I think I'll just wander around the bookstore next time I get a chance to go out and see what I come up with.

I think you can only do so much at home - ideally you need person to person conversation to chew something over - or this website.
Think of Terry Waite, imprisoned for five years or so, he had no choice but his own company.
I 'subscribed' to this thread via 'thread tools' but am not getting emails of new posts. When I click again it says 'unsubscribe' so I would seem to be right to expect emails. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks, but still no emails, I have done as you suggested.
I have * on my safe list but no mention of www.4believers.com (http://www.4believers.com) there
Shall I put this on my safe list?
Perhaps my firewall is getting in the way or some other software.
Thanks for your help

Hi Derby,
I removed the email address in your message--if the spam bots pick that up (which they would) they'd spam me to death!
I would say to put both pixelbow.com and 4believers.com domains on your safe list.

Move them all en bloc - like when credit cards first came out - everyone got one in the post.

I love the Beth Moore studies. I use to be a part of a bible study group that used her material and I was always blessed by them.
Due to the fact that I am rarely able to find a babysitter for the kids I usually end up doing the studies myself. So far I haven't had any problems doing the studies on my own.

Oh, good. I wasn't sure it was possible to do them by yourself. Thanks for the input!

The best Bible study I ever did was the Concentrated Bible Study.
You read the same 10 chapters of the New Testament every day for one week. On the third day, you make an index card for each chapter, listing the prominent topics/subjects covered in the chapter, and you memorize what you've written on the cards.
At the end of the week, the class meets, the moderator asks questions, like: in which chapter do we find the beatitudes? In which chapter do we find this verse.......
The interesting thing is, someone can quote a verse, and you will see the page in your Bible where that verse can be found. You can turn to any number of places instantly when someone mentions a topic, a verse, whatever.
The most beautiful thing about the study, though, is that, for the first time, I saw the New Testament as a whole piece, a tapestry, woven of many threads, and that it all fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. And saw that the parts so many people say are contradictory are not contradictory at all, when you see the whole. I also saw how many parts are taken out of context to fit people's ideas, rather than the other way 'round.
It has been over 30 years since I did that Bible study -- I wish I could find a class and repeat it, because some of my ability to find things when I need them has faded with age and diminishing memory.

LOL! Tommie Lyn, I just ran across that same picture and copied it to my computer. Fun!
I've never heard of that study. Who wrote it?

Don't remember for sure, but I believe the author was Don Huddleston. (Don't quote me on that...)

I'm doing a study now in I Corinthians but I can't find who it's by! It's provided through my church and our women's group is doing it. It's probably a Calvary Chapel resource. Very good.
I also have E-Sword on my computer and love it! It's a free program that you download and then add things to it according to your own needs. I've got different bible versions, commentaries, dictionaries, maps, all kinds of complete books like Fox's Book of Martyrs and the complete works of John Bunyon. It's got a cool prayer tool, a bible memory verse program that has fun tests and much much more. Everything I have on mine was free but they have tons of other resources you can add as well that have a minimal charge. I love it.. I get up in the morning, open up my E-sword and my prayer tools appear first (i set it to do that) so I go through my list. When I close that the bible is open at a random verse, with my selected commentary open on the right and dictionaries on the bottom. I love getting the random verse! I read the verse, the commentary, etc. and it just naturally flows along and I find I learn so much. If I get a verse I don't want to do (like a "beget" verse) I just scroll over to a psalm or something. It's an awesome tool... check it out here: http://www.e-sword.net/ :)

[QUOTE=lynnmosher;368]Derby, You sound like me. I love to dig. I love, love, love digging into the OT. We overlook so much when we confine ourselves to the NT. I love studying by subjects and by researching the meanings of words.
Hi Lynn! Hope you're feeling much bette by now. I've been off line for a while, (computer problems...ugh!) but wanted to mention that there is a class you might enjoy taking online out of the YWAM base which is called The King's Lodge in Nuneaton, England. It's an off-shoot of the School of Biblical Studies (SBS)and I believe they have what they call a "Distance Learning" course. And if it truly is SBS that they offer via email; you would absolutely love it!
SBS drove me crazy because I am not bent that way. I want to get down to the basics of, "what does this mean to me today" without having to dig, dig, dig! :) However, my husband loves the research aspect and even did some teaching in France and one of the Carribian Islands (sorry, can't remember which one) as far as covering specific books of the Bible. His, I believe though were New Testament.
I have a close friend (almost family) who used to set these SBS schools up all over the world and if you'd like, I'll ask her to contact you and tell you all she knows about where and how you might be able to do something like this online. The King's Lodge may charge for their Distance Learning courses. This is because you can also receive college credit through YWAM's University of the Nation by taking any of the YWAM courses.
I believe that surely though, someone out there would work with you online free to be able to learn some of the study methods they use. They do the "inductive Bible method" of studying. I know that Kay Authur also has an Inductive Bible Study workbook and study guide that might work well also.
Anyway, these are a few ideas for you in case you are still searching.
Blessings my friend!

Hey, Gerrie, thanks! I'm almost back to my normal yuckiness!
I'll check into that study. I've done a bazillion of Kay Arthur's studies. I even taught the one on Covenant. The absolutely best study ever! Studying covenant is awesome and eye-opening. Excellent!
Blessings back atcha!!!
