I thought we'd start with the historical genre, since that was at the top of our running list. Please cast your vote for the book you'd like the group to focus on during February. Voting will be open until Jan. 31.

I like the book "Christy". But I read "Redeeming Love" recently, and it deeply moved me. So I vote for "Redeeming Love".

...um, I've of course already read several of these several times, but I voted Last Sin Eater...though I would be open to either of the Francine Rivers books. :)

I'm cheating. I'm two chapters and an epilogue away from finishing The Historian, so I'd love to hear other folks talk about it.

My second choice would be A Passage to India.

I read "One Night With the King" a long time ago, and I remember it impacted me a lot emotionally. But I'm not going to vote... at least not yet.

I voted for Christy...but it was only after a hard struggle. I like a lot of those books, and there are a few that I want to read soon. I hope we do get around to reading them!
Anyway, I look forward to the discussions on whichever one is chosen.

God bless!

Ach, I just noticed I misspelled "Redeeming" in the top poll choice. *bonks self on head*

I voted for Christy because I have read it twice but not for awhile. I also read The Last Sin Eater and I have Redeeming love on my TBR pile. I started it a while ago, but felt uncomfortable reading it and put it aside. Perhaps we could choose a book to discuss in the future and we can all read it. Shoes of the Fisherman sounds good to me. It is about Peter, right?

That's we're doing. We're voting to decide which book to read next month.:)

Actually, I believe it's about Pope Kiril I, who was pope in the 1960s.

Thanks for posting the above so quickly. Can I change my vote. I was thinking the discussion would start immediately. I already have Redeeming Love so I can give it a second look. The Historian sounds good, too. Pope Kiril the first? A pope in the 1960's? I'll have to research that. I remember Pope Paul the VI and Pope John the XXIII in the 60's.

Ah, I see. He is a fictional Pope. Guess my intelligence is still showing. Please pick an easy one for me. Love, Elaine

Sorry, the poll won't let you change your vote. I suppose you could try adding a second vote though...;)

I voted for Redeeming Love, but I've not read the author. I'm curious. What made you uncomfortable reading the book?

I pick With Lee in Virginia, only because I've never heard of this book. I looked it up on Amazon...

This classic novel about a Southern soldier and an escaped slave he helps during the Civil War

Sounds interesting.

Who picks the titles in the list. I'd like to see Liz Curtis Higgs' historical series among them.

I added the title you suggested to our "running list," but it'll have to wait until we come around to the historical genre again.

The titles on the list sound intriguing. Sorrry to say, I have read only one of them, Christy. I am open to reading the book chosen by the majority. How much time do we have to read the book before discussion begins in February???

Discussion will be open throughout February. Actually, the discussion will probably stay open until the end of time... but toward the end of February we'll run a new poll and select a new book for the month of March.

I didn't vote, because I would be happy to read anything on the list (except for Christy), though I have been wanting to read one of Henty's books. They are on a lot of the home school reading lists. I read Christy as a teenager and loved it, but that TV series ruined it for me. I don't know that I would want to read it again.

Are we going to have time to read it (whatever the selection ends up being) before the discussion starts, or are we looking for books we've already read?

Are we going to have time to read it (whatever the selection ends up being) before the discussion starts, or are we looking for books we've already read?

The discussion will be ongoing throughout February (and, unofficially, beyond). If we find that a month isn't long enough for people to read the selection, we'll extend the official discussion periods to two months. Personally, I'm looking for books I haven't already read... so I'll chime in on the discussion as soon as I've finished the selection. Others may already have read the selection, so, of course, they won't need to re-read it unless they want to.

Does that sound good to everyone? Any suggestions to make this whole thing run more smoothly?

Tamera
01-24-2008, 03:54 PM
I personally think we should take two months and not have any discussions for two weeks. That way even those who have read the selection will have a chance to review it and those who haven't won't feel like they've been left behind in the discussion. You could have a poll for the next selection during the second month of discussion. That's just my opinion.

Tarin
01-24-2008, 05:58 PM
I've been leaning that way myself. Unless anyone has a problem with the idea of extending reading periods to two months, I think that's what we'll do.

Rachel E.
01-24-2008, 07:51 PM
The one issue I see with extending the period to two months, is that some people will still get in on this thing too late to read it anyway! I'm not being mean, but I read pretty fast, do we really have to wait two weeks to discuss the books? Just curious..

God bless!

I agree with what Tamera said: I don't think it wise to start the discussion until some time has passed (2 weeks seems fine) after the decision has been announced on which book we're reading.

I don't think that 2 weeks is the magic number, I just don't want all the discussion to start among people who have already read the book ... whatever it is.

What time limit do you all think would be best? Two weeks sounds about right to me.

Two weeks sounds right to me too. Although some read faster than others, most would be done or close to it in two weeks.

Two weeks sounds good to me, and I've read every book on the poll except the last three...lol...my thing is I might not have time to discuss it right away, and depending on the book I might just need to skip through it a bit for a refresher....so yeah, two weeks is perfect! :)

Hmm... I just realized that I'm going to be on the on road and away from a computer Feb. 14-18, which would be the first week of our discussion as things now stand. Would anyone be opposed to moving our "official" opening date up to the 10th, just for the this one time. I wouldn't ask, except I'd like to be around for the first few days since this is our "Grand Opening." :P Anyway, if that's cramping reading time too much, I'll understand... I'll just have to go find a corner to pout in. ;)

ProfessorAlan

No problem here. I like the idea of the announcement being moved up to. It looks like everybody's all ready voted.

Tarin,

That sounds good to me. We'll officially begin discussing the book on the 10th? Tell me, when are you going to announce the winner? Just curious... :p

Tarin
01-26-2008, 05:30 PM
Thanks for being considerate of my plight! ;) Although the poll won't officially close until next Thursday, I agree that most of the votes are probably already in. So, unless anyone disagrees, we'll go ahead and "name the winner" on Monday (Jan. 28). Then everyone can start reading. I'll try to write up the "rules" we've pounded out thus far. Perhaps Rebecca or one of the mods can make it a "stickie," so that newbies will be able to understand what we're doing.

I posted the "guidelines (http://christianwriters.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15084)." Take a look and see if I missed anything. I'm going to make note of it in the Support forum, and hopefully Rebecca or one of the mods can make it into a stickie.

No prob. It was my idea, so I was happy to do the legwork. Thanks to you all for your suggestions and enthusiasm. I'm really excited about this; can't wait to get started! I've already put Redeeming Love on hold at the library, so hopefully one of their two copies will be returned soon!

Good work! The guidelines are simple and straightforward. I can't wait to get started on "Redeeming Love" by Francine Rivers. How will the discussion work on the 14th? at what time?

Tarin
01-28-2008, 05:43 PM
This month is an exception, in that the discussion will actually open on the 10th. Anyone can open the discussion with their opinions, both good and bad. Hopefully, we'll get some good dialogue going on. :) There is no set time; the discussion will be officially ongoing until the end of March, when the group will vote on another selection.

I had a hard time deciding between Christy and The Shoes of the Fisherman. I love both and haven't read either in ages. I may revisit them regardless of which book wins the poll!

Christy is the only one I know about...a little.

Most of my reading is more for information than entertainment. Not that I am against entertaining reading. The problem is I have to prioritize, and knowledge and info. come first, for now.

I've been out of pocket web-wise,and February is already past. Which book did you end up discussing from this list?

I believe the first one on the list must have actuallty been "Redeeming Love" by Francine Rivers. Right? If so, and if this was not chosen for February's book, I'd like to vote for that one for March. It was one of the best books I've read in a very long time. I could no put it down!!thumbsup!

We are discussing Redeeming Love until the end of March. There's a poll up now for April. These are seperate threads under Book Club.
