Hey, pet lovers! Tell me what you think and do.

My 90-something pound black lab mix is due to have his monthly dose of flea and tick medicine. The problem is that I ran out. I've been getting this, along with his heartworm medicine, from the vet. Recently, however, I've noticed a tv commercial with Betty White saying that ordering your pet's meds from 1-800-petmeds is the better (cheaper) way to go.

Have any of you gotten your pets meds this way? Or do you prefer to get them from the vet or some other way? If you order them by mail, how long does it take to get them?

The ticks around here have been more prominent than usual this year, so I don't want to just forget it. Smokey is basically a house dog but we take him outside for at least a couple of hours a day when the weather is nice. We have about 60 acres for him to roam and sniff through and, of course, he easily becomes a tick magnet.

So, let me know what you do with your pets, ok? Smokey and I say "thanks!" :)

I know many a people who have used 1800 pet meds... even some that work for vets because they could get it cheaper from 1800 than they could there own work place.
They are the same meds and I would say go for it. Yet, like everything check the pricing with shipping and handling and compare to your vets prices.

Hey mbeachbum,

Did you know that you can get most of the same flea and tick meds from your local petstores? I use to work at Petland and we've compared products with the vet finding that they were exactly the same but ours were cheaper. As far as heartworm I think that's something you'll have to take up with the vets. I know nothing about tv shopping so I can't say anything about what Betty White is saying.

Just make sure you read the labels - 'someone' on this site had drastic results using dog stuff on the cat - sort of got rid of the fleas in a permanent manner!

The only time i tried to order from betty white they wanted to charge me like 2.95 a minute to talk to her. I also found a pet meds on line and they seemed cheaper but i never ordered any. i don't trust my dogs with just anyone not even sweet betty white LOL...
Check everything out very carefulle after all what is a few bucks when it comes to our furry little loved ones.

I stick with the vet I've been with for 10 years. he even told me i could continue to feed my dogs rice and chicken. I'm still not feeding my dogs any canned dog food and likely I wont. I read they put dead animals in pet food. YUCK,

When my beloved Waggner got sick, I didn't know to shop around for the things she needed. All my local vets wanted money up front (which I didn't have at that moment--Sept. is a bad month for me financially) and I wasn't acquainted with the clinic in a small town nearby that charges 1/2 what is charged in the bigger city.

Anyway, I became acquainted with a local feed and seed store. They not only sold me the antibiotics that Waggner needed to extend her life for awhile, but I also found that they sold flea, tick, and even some worm medicines. Unfortunately, by the time I got the money to give to the vet, she was too far gone. I didn't get another dog till I found a better vet.!

The flea and tick meds from the feed and seed store are the same that I bought from the vet and seem to work with the same results--very good for the Carolina Dog, fair with the Lab.

I've never ordered pet meds online, but just as tlm, I have received good prices at the feed store. Not just for my kid's horses, but also for our mastiffs.

I'd say go for it, as long as you're certain that the meds are the same.

I have 2 cats, and one of them is diabetic. Last year, we changed the insulin that we give her and it is EXPENSIVE! My vet and I have called around to find the best price, and it's been within a dollar for everywhere we've tried--CVS, WalGreens, Wal-Mart, Target, etc. But, it's a human insulin, since, to the best of my knowledge, they don't manufacture insulin specifically for felines. Go figure.

My husband used to order heart worm and flea medications online. It usually took a week to get here if it was from the U.S., but he often found they were cheaper from Australia, in which case it took two weeks to arrive. The medications were the same, made by the same famous makers you buy here with one exception the weights were different - pounds and kilograms(?) if I recall. In the site it told how to convert them according to dog size. All the online medicines worked great. TLM, I kept having problems when my golden retrievers were younger and I thought it was the flea medication, but it was that the dogs would often jump in the pond not long after an application of medicine. The vet told me not to let them get wet for two days afterward (and not to stroke their hair where it was applied for that long because it could still be present and soak into your skin.) After that, the medicine would often work long past its recommended month. I figure labs like water, so, maybe...

She isn't getting to water, but I thought she might be rubbing the medicine into the ground. We made her stay inside the whole afternoon and wouldn't let her rub her back on anything, but she still starts with scratching fits about 20 days after the application. The lab we had before this one was the same way.

It doesn't seem to matter where we get the medicine. The results are the same.

Now the other two dogs we had were fine, but they were both high strung lap dogs--not that I think that would make the difference.
