Has anyone else seen Luther (the movie)? I just rented it this week and enjoyed it a lot. Even my hubby, who usually sighs through the historical films I love, really like it.

I admit I don't know much about Martin Luther; does anyone know how accurate the film is?

Well, the film certainly downplays some of his less admirable qualities (virulent anti-Semitism perhaps leading that list) but overall carries across just why Martin Luther is such an important historical figure, and it also illustrates quite well why the Reformation needed to happen.

Sadly, it seems most modern protestantism has fallen quite in line with many of the Roman Church's old habits. One would hope more would see the film and know how many Christians these days are being taken for a ride...

My wife and I saw it in the theatre, and thought it was quite good.

It covered the basic biography accurately, and seemed to portray the reasons for reformation fairly.

I rented it a year ago and thought it was fantastic. I was upset that it didn't have the scene where Luther throws his ink bottle at the devil, but otherwise thought it was good.

If you pay attention to the credits, it was commissioned by the Lutheran church.

Echoing Ransom's comments, I remember the thrill as a newly baptised Protestant when I first learned about the Reformation. I put down Catholics (and I was raised Catholic) for not reading the bible, holding to views not in line with scripture, etc. But I see many Protestant churches following in its footsteps, and I find some Catholics to be more reformed than Protestants. Protestantism grew because it recaptured the truth of the Bible, and it will die if it progressively rejects that same truth.

I was upset that it didn't have a scene where he chased the devil off with a fart...

Thanks, everyone. I agree that there are many parallels between the Church then and now. As we watched the movie, I found myself thinking of Keith Green's song "Keep All That Junk To Yourself."

It's a great movie, with good acting, drama and humour and possibly the best overt talk about faith and grace I've seen in a movie (without being cheesy).
The cinematography could have been a bit better but as it was, it's a very good movie.

I only wished they'd had somebody mention that Luther was essentially following Christ's example, overturning the tables at the temple.
