I thought some of you may enjoy taking part in a marketing survey for Bethany House.
That was very interesting. I will look forward to seeing how the cover is designed.

I'll bet that's what they're hoping... ;)

Definitely feels like a marketing plug. If they truly wanted my opinion on covers from various books, instead of only one, it would be an interesting exercise in critiquing cover designs, rather than an apparent bid for sales.
Definitely feels like a marketing plug.
I agree--and a good marketing plug at that!

Actually, in my experience, some publishers do want input only on specific book covers. Not all books get this treatment...only some.
Sure, it may boost sales a bit, too, but it's actually very strange (to my way of thinking) that publishers don't do this sort of thing will all their books.

They're probably afraid of a trillion whinging bloggers coming down on them complaining about how the cover they picked wasn't used.
I pick the covers for Ray Gun Revival. I didn't care for any of them, although the cover with the woman was the best of the lot. I look for covers that tell a story. These covers didn't do anything for me at all.

Yeah, that was pretty much my take on it too. I love graphic design, so I'm always looking for snappy covers. To me all three of these covers looked like some generic cover art churned out by a vanity press.

I'll have to remember that strategy when my book is done :D

When I was in market research, we did cover stories for movies that were being released directly to DVD. The basic idea was that it was a movie that no one had heard of, with no one in it that anyone had heard of, with a stereotypical plot - sooo, what kind of cover would grab people's attention enough that they would pick this thing up and actually rent or buy it?
The trend I noticed was that a particular cover would remind people of a more popular movie and that would cause them to have a certain level of interest in it. I think this survey is similar. Which of these covers look enough like the type of book you usually read that it makes you want to check out this one?

Still, I thought it was fun and I hope I win the book I chose. I read quite a few good reviews on it.

I think some of the best covers are a plain solid colored cover, it sticks out from the rest of them thats for sure.

I agree. I chose the woman cover too, it was the only one that seemed to have anything to do with the description. The covers were all bland and generic to me. I also thought the title could have been better.
(Even after reading the description, I wasn't particularly interested in reading it)
