In life, there are troubles that will arise suddenly. Each one of us has had "storms" that have come into our lives. These are problems or circumstances that we do not expect. When such events arise, some people are overwhelmed. They feel as if the problems will pull them down. When the storm clouds of life arise, there is One who calms the storms. All He has to say is, "Peace, be still."
WHEN THE STORM CLOUDS ROLL
In Mark 4:36-40, Jesus and His disciples got into a boat in order to go across the lake. Jesus had just finished teaching a large crowd, when He left. While the disciples guided the boat, Jesus took a nap. As they were rowing, a sudden storm quickly came upon them. They were frightened, because they could not control the boat. They believed that they were going to sink.
Have you ever been caught off guard by the storms of life? Those are events that you don't plan for. How do you react? Some people become so fearful, that they believe that the storms will overwhelm them. They feel as if they are being tossed back and forth by waves of trouble. These people believe that they have lost control and they are not sure what to do. Have you ever found yourself in this situation? Have you been tossed about by the storms? Have you ever wondered, "Who will calm the storm, and speak words of peace?"
PEACE, BE STILL
At first, it almost seemed as if the disciples had forgotten about Jesus. They forgot that Jesus was in the boat with them. In the midst of the storm, they finally turned to Jesus. They told Him their fears, and He heard them. All Jesus had to do was say, "Peace, be still." When He had said this, all was calm and peaceful.
When the storm clouds come, do we remember that we have Jesus with us? Do we turn to Him and say, 'Master, help me." ? Jesus steps forward and says to our storms, "Peace, be still." He calms the storms that rage against us. He is able to restore both calm and peace to our lives. He tells us not to worry. As long as He is with us, the storms will not overtake us.
PEACE THROUGH THE STORMS
From time to time, the storms will arise. Yet, we need not fear. There is One who has command over the wind and the waves. There is One who can calm the storm. All He needs to say is, "Peace, be still." That is enough to quiet the storm.
It is written in Psalm 107:23-30, "Those who go down to the sea in ships, who do business on great waters, they see the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep. For He commands and raises the stormy wind, which lifts up the waves of the sea. They mount up to the depths; their soul melts because of trouble. They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit's end. Then they cry out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brings them out of their distresses. He calms the storm. So that the waves are still. Then they are glad because they are so quiet; so He guides them to their desired haven."
The storms can be rough at times, but we can cry out to the Lord. He will hear us. He will travel with us through the storm. Once we remember that the Lord travels with us, we need not fear the storms. He will tell the storms,
"Peace, be still." He will take control of our boat, and He will pilot us to the heavenly haven.
"Jesus, Savior, pilot me,
Over life's tempestuous sea;
Unknown waves before me roll;
Hiding rock and treacherous shoal.
Chart and compass come from thee,
Jesus, Savior, pilot me."
