View Full Version : What can I use as a credit?
I am trying to find a home for a manuscript that I wrote for a publisher that I found out later could not be used as a publishing credit. The whole incident is a long story, but I got my rights back. This book really doesn't work for most of the traditional presses, as it is too trendy. At least that is what one of the publishers said.
Anyway, I was checking out the site for Wings ePress Inc. I have to send a query and go through a submission process. The MS would be an ebook and paperback. All sales would be on-line though. Would this publisher be a writing credit? I mean, if I don't do something this book will remain on my computer forever. I would like to at least, get a writing credit, even if I don't make much money out of the deal.
Of course, they could turn me down, too.

Do you have to pay them to publish? If not, then yeah, I'd call it a credit.
I don't think so, but you don't have to pay to publish with Lulu, Publish America, or CafePress either. They are not publishing credits. I guess the big difference is whether they accept anything that is sent to them. Lulu, Publish America, and CafePress will accept anything because they are a printer not a publisher.
I guess what I am asking is, is Wings ePress Inc. a printer or publisher? Does anyone know?

Hi Toni,
I looked at their website. The only thing I would be concerned about is distribution. However, you and I both know from past experience the importance of thoroughly checking a publisher out before we sign on the line.
I suggest you bounce over to Absolute Write and read the post about Wings ePress in their 'Beware and Backgrounds' forum.

Thank you very much for the info. That was exactly what I was worried about.

You are so right! <Sigh> Things are looking bleak for this poor little MS I wrote specifically for them. PA riddled the MS with typos and--well--it seems like I am at a dead end .:(

If you get paid, then it is a legit credit. Otherwise, it is not.

Technically, I got paid from PA, and I did make a profit from my book (more than most of their authors--though that isn't much) while I was with PA. PA had such a bad reputation, though, many writers won't use them as a credit when they query other publishers.
