I saw this today and thought it would stir some thought.
A good many young writers make the mistake of enclosing a stamped, self-addressed envelope, big enough for the manuscript to come back in. This is too much of a temptation to the editor.

Terrific quote. Maybe we should send a postcard instead?
One book I read (I want to say it was "How I Write" by Janet Evanovich) suggested that you do that, and have 2 or three check boxes on it--I.E.: Not Interested; Please submit full manuscript; etc. It saves you money on postage, and, may give you an answer more quickly. Then, they can just use you MS for scratch paper or to line their birdcages :D or to give to another editor that may read your work and think you're brilliant and give you a call. :)

Ah, but then you don't get to get those wonderful form rejection letters!
Honestly, with the postage jacking up again, I was considering just sending small SASEs anyway, but I've also read that marking a MS as disposable also gives bad hints to the editor.
Maybe it's a good thing for editors to line their birdcages with our MSs--their parrots might get them to change their minds about us!
With the ability to save the ms on the computer, it doesn't really make sense to go to the expense of having the ms returned.
