new author

I am a new author and have checked out self publishing companies. I have found that by the time the editing is completed, content, lawouts, cover and back cover, advertising, the actual pulishing, all of which cost a certain amount of $$ each, and per word, I could end up paying more then the $4000everyone has been talking about with Tate publishing company.
Besides anyone can have anything put into print and really be the only one who thinks their work is good. At least if a traditional publisher says your work is good enough for publication, then I would think it would be.
