Hello everyone
I am new to the forum and I felt moved to post this. I am very saddened by a recent investment with self publishing. I've been writing for more than 20 years and I've won my share of awards and honors. I'm the kind of writer that gets a thrill off simply writing--contests wins, accolades or not.

For years it's been a dream to write a book and I finished my first manuscript. As a Christian,I found it natural to write on Christian themes. I decided to self publish my first book and investigated self publishing for several years.

..and then I went for it. After much prayer and a decision to invest my own money, I signed a deal to self publish with a Christian publishing company.

All was well, my money was paid and I later submitted the manuscript. When the book went into the production phase, the problems began. I was never told that I could contribute my vision for the cover and it was designed without me. When I saw the cover they designed, my heart dropped. It did not match what I believed was the core message of the book. When I inquired about changes, I was told that fees would be charged--we're talking $100 to change the color of a word on the cover. I was devastated that not only did I get a cover I did not want, if the company changed it, it would cost me. I wasn't given the full cost of what a whole new design would be, but I was told that whatever it was--they have to calculate cost and I would have to pay it up front.

To make matters worse, I then attempted to see if I could submit my own cover. I have a few skills as a graphics artist, so I went for it. When I submitted the new cover, I was told that this did not meet company specifications and was advised to "go to Staples" and ask for their help.

So what did I pay all the money for up front? To date, I have contacted the vp of the company, my liasion and several people to get help and I have been ignored so far. I have even inquired about canceling the deal and getting at least some of my money back--with no help so far. I did a search on the Better Business Bureau site and this company has some complaints from clients.

Here it is-I've invested money into a project that I have no control over and now the company won't even help me unless I shell out more cash or accept their own "vision." I feel duped! This is a warning to anyone who may opt to self publish. Please be careful!

Thanks for having the courage to share your experience with us. Is there any way you can get out of the contract and get your money, or part of it returned to you?

Hello and thanks for your comments! I am in the process of trying to get this situation ironed out and one of my requests is to retain most if not all of my money invested if the company can't give me what I need to complete this project.

So far, I have not been given a resolution and I hope I will get some support from this company very soon. I did some research and discovered the company has a few complaints with the Better Business Bureau--about five total. If they will not help me, then I will contact the BBB for support!

I am not speaking against self publishing. I am really trying to share what I'm going through to help other writers. It is so easy to get duped in this business, especially when you're new and unlearned. But--a customer should aways get what they've paid for. I will definitely continue posting as much info as I can about my case!

Thanks again for your comments.

Dear FloridaWriter,

The BBB may not help much. I know authors who tried to get the BBB to help them with problems they had with Publish America and they did nothing. The reason is the BBB deals with business to consumer relationships. They do not seem to view publisher to author as such, but in reality it is business to business.

Your best bet is to talk to a literary attorney. Sounds to me this publisher is not upholding their end of the contact. If I were you, I would request they dissolve their contract with you, and if not that you would take them to arbitration.

Thanks love2write for your advice!

My husband mention speaking to an attorney and I don't think it's a bad idea at all. It can't hurt. Hopefully I will hear from a company rep in the next few days to iron out these issues.:)

I agree with love2write. If you can get out of your contract, you might explore some of the print on demand companies, like Lulu or Cafepress. There are threads on these (and probably other) companies.

I will be making an announcement about something similar to this in the next few days.

Just curious. What is the genre of your book? And, why not go the traditional route?

Dear Writers,

Please look at the thread 'Writers Beware's Two Thumbs Down List of Publishers' over in the Writers Lounge.

There are wolves in sheeps clothing out there just waiting for anxious writers to hand their money over.
