THERE GOES THE RABBIT!
Have you ever encountered a rabbit waiting beside a lonely road, watching as you approach in your car? I remember many such experiences driving down the long dirt that led to home. It seemed to happen mostly at night, headlights illuminating the bushes and rocks along the edge of the road as I moseyed along, that I’d see two luminescent green orbs parked at the shoulder, waiting.
“Oh, oh,” I’d whisper with a chuckle. “A rabbit.”
And sure enough, when the car was nearly abreast, it would break and run. Only it didn’t run away from my car but right out in front of me, racing for all it’s might, trying to outrun me. I’d usually slow down, laugh at it’s futile attempt to out run a car and follow the half-mad critter until it finally jumped off the road to the safety of the shadows again.
Life is like that you know. We’re sitting along life’s road, waiting, listening when suddenly a potentially dangerous situation appears on the horizon. We know God is in control, that we are safe if we just stay put.
“Hold steady,” whispers God. But as it nears, another voice drowns out Gods whispers of assurance.
“RUN! RUN!” it screams in our other ear. “If you don’t run it’s going to kill you.”
We hold steady, steady, shaking, fear mounts, panic replaces faith, and finally we heed the final “RUN!” from the enemy, we bolt and run. Blinded by the headlights, deafened by the noise, we run directly into the path of the approaching danger and splat! If only we would have held our peace, let it pass.
Satan uses scare tactics to root us from the safety of God’s protection. He screams, yells, frightens us with half-truths and warning sirens. But we must not yield. Hold steady, keep focused on God’s voice and wait for his direction. No more splat, no more being run over with the mac truck. Peace and joy, patience and endurance will be ours.
