“Then God told me, "Get a big sheet of paper and write in indelible ink, 'This belongs to Maher-shalal-hash-baz (Spoil-Speeds-Plunder-Hurries).'" (Isaiah 8:1 The Message) For this lesson forget the part, 'This belongs to Maher-shalal-hash-baz (Spoil-Speeds-Plunder-Hurries).' We’re not talking about that but what we are talking about is the tie in between memory and writing.

We, the born again child of God, have the mind of Christ, that’s what we got when we were born again, not just redemption from sin. When Paul was writing to the Corinthian church he said this about the children of God not just his team, “But we have the mind of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 2:16b New International Version) Now, that mind includes the knowledge, the wisdom, and the memory of God (we must grow in it but it’s ours to grow in). There is no one alive on earth today, except Jesus Himself, who can legally and rightfully say that since he has the mind of Christ he knows everything there is to know, operates in all wisdom, and remembers everything, that person would be lying through his socks.

Yes we do have the mind of The Anointed One but we have to do at least three things with it to perfect it in us, we have to 1) activate it, you do this by accepting and acknowledging it by confession, 2) use it, put it into action everywhere you go, and 3) grow in it, do what you have to in order to expand it in you.

In this lesson we’re dealing, mainly, with the memory aspect but every aspect can be affected by this maneuver. “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Write down for the record everything I have said to you, Jeremiah.” (Jeremiah 30:2 New Living Translation) Put your name in place of Jeremiah. “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says (that means He’s still saying it): Write down for the record everything I have said to you, ______________.” That means the Lord is talking to you. Some people have said, “But it’s too hard, I keep forgetting to keep a journal.” Well, do something about it.

This is what I do, and you may decide to do the same, I keep paper and pen by my bed because that’s when God gives me ideas and things to write about and prophecies. Whet some people do, and I’ve known people who do this, they carry either a small pad and pen or a micro-cassette tape recorder with them. And when they hear something that helps them or get an idea or whatever they either write it down or they speak it into their tape recorder. Many people keep their paper and pen next to the phone that they use most, others put the paper on the frig.

I guess, what I am trying to make clear to you is that writing is very, very, very important to your spiritual growth, also to your physical and mental growth and recovery. Two of the main courses in school, usually taught as one course, are reading and writing. Those are not taught as electives and they are not taught as fillers, to fill a time slot. I don’t pity, feel bad for, those who are upwards of 16 years old who don’t know how to read and write. I would teach them but they had a choice earlier and chose wrong.

English class teaches reading and writing in English, French class teaches reading and writing in French (speaking also). In every language class they are going to teach these three things (if you take them long enough) speaking, reading and writing. It’s for more than just communication with others; it’s for memory skills too.

Anyway, if you are having trouble remembering things you now know what you can do to help yourself remember, “And the LORD answered me: ’Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.’” (Habakkuk 2:2 English Standard Version) You might even be the runner who needs to read it, so make sure you can.

Writing was one of the oldest and first things the man was taught, that and farming, and somehow man learned to talk. God didn’t give writing just for fun, he had a purpose for it and it wasn’t just for writing the Bible. No, if you need help remembering things, which all of us do, use that pen and paper and write it down.

Even Jesus wrote things down, but I don’t think He was forgetful. “They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger.” (John 8:6 New Living Translation) It’s not recorded what He wrote but it is clear that He did write something.

Many people have said that they will remember, but when the time came they forgot. Sometimes they conveniently forget, meaning they never really wanted to remember, but sometimes they forgot because they didn’t write down what they wanted to remember. This is true not just for appointments but also for everything. You may have said, “I’ve got to change my speaking habits,” and the next day forget what you said, write it down. It’s much easier to remember what you yourself said if you yourself write it down. There is a definite connection between your hands and your memory, I can’t explain it maybe someone else can, because when you right something down you stand a much greater chance of remembering it, even if you don’t look at what you wrote. But you may want to look at what you wrote just in case.

Here is a suggestion for helping your memory grow: WRITE IT, READ IT, REMEMBER IT, REPEAT IT, REPEAT, until it’s, like, part of you.
