Lately, just as sort of decent practice, I've been posting reviews to Amazon.com . I am in no way a book reviewer, but it's a decent way to make yourself a five-minute writing exercise. Try it!

I search for a book I've just finished, or have read in the past, and post a review on it. Nothing huge, just insightful thoughts about the work.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

Hi Cawheat,

I've done this, too! I suppose it never occurred to me to view it as a writing exercise, but you're absolutely correct. Writing reviews is excellent practice.

I originally started writing reviews on Amazon for Christian books, especially novels, which I enjoyed. My hope is that a favorable review may encourage an unsaved person to purchase and read the book. Exposure to the gospel message and/or a look at the world from a Christian perspective can be a real eye-opener for an unbeliever. Hopefully they will become intrigued enough to want more! :)

Yes! By all means post reviews of books on Amazon. The authors will bless you. (Provided, of course it's a good review.) :)

Seriously, though, reviews on Amazon are taken very seriously by authors and even by publishers. Last week I forwarded to my editor at McGraw-Hill a nice email sent to me by someone who'd bought my book on Web design ("How to Do Everything with HTML"). My editor wrote back and suggested I contact the person and ask if they would post a review on Amazon.

So, your reviews are read and appreciated. Plus, it's a great way to get practice in doing book reviews.
