Hi Jim,
Looks like a big project. It's an honest endeavor.
Just some questions.

How much editorial experience do you have? Is this your first magazine?
Do you have a readership base yet?
Do you know how much competition you have?
Without advertising, how can you float the mag on just subscriptions? I know this last question really isn't my business, but if you're promising to pay, a writer may want to know if they have a long term or short term job.

I wish you well. I might be interested in writing for a couple of the columns you are projecting.

Dr Rita,
Thanks for the reply and good questions. This is my first magazine although I have done some newsletters (church and business) for several years. I don't have a readership as yet, but I do have lists of people who have bought my material over the years and I plan to market aggressively. I know new ventures need to get off to a good start in order to keep going. I am not saying I will never work with advertisers, just not for a while. As for whether it can be done on subscriptions, it depends on how many sign up. My goal is 300 to start (January 2006) and double that by years end. I also know I may have to bankroll this myself for a time and I'm prepared to do so. However God leads. Let me know if you'd like to discuss columns and which ones you might be interested in. Take care.
Blessings,
Jim

Hello,
I'm interested in your new magazine. I would like to write a column for you in the "day to day living" area. I've encountered a lot of ups and downs, like raising two kids alone after only 5 years of marriage when my husband died, marriage late in life, one child with ADHD, the other with a learning disability; working without insurance, etc.

I would be excited to be part of your new magazine. At any rate, I've think you've got a great idea, so go for it!

Hi,

I am interested in writing for you new magazine. I am very excited to see it is a column format. I already write for a website as a relationship columnist. I mostly write about relationships in the church. I checked out your website and am interested in "strengthening relationships" topic. Please consider me as I have had experience in real life and actually writing about it  If you would like samples, I would be happy to give you some asap.

God Bless,

Here is a new way to find out about "Keepin' On " by signing on to my new yahoo group.
I have set this up to make is simpler to communicate with the many people who have expressed interest in writing for the magazine. Also, it will be a central place for new information and, I hope, an opportunity to build a creative community to work together to produce an excellent magazine.
The group is found at:

I hope to hear from you all there'

Anyone know what became of this? I signed up for the 'mailing list" and all I've gotten is a mailbox full of SPAM!!!

Anyone actually hear from this person? When I checked his profile, it said the last time he was on here was 10/16.

I also logged on to the yahoo group and there is still no activity. Just curious.

This is the correspondence that I have received from Jim recently. I think the project just got a little delayed

Darlene

Greetings and Happy New Year to all of you who may have been wondering
what
happened to me and the Keepin’ On magazine. First, please accept my
apologies for my lack of response over the past many weeks. So much
has
happened: a severe health relapse in the family, a son in crisis, and
the
sudden death of one of my oldest friends. The counseling practice I
work
for opened a new branch office and asked me to head it up. I have also
realized, after weeks of attempts, that I lack the technical expertise
to
make the magazine what it ought to be.
BUT, God is greater than all of these things and He continues to
encourage
me to keep on. All of my personal concerns are improving, and I have
brought in a professional to set up the website and magazine. There
will be
additional cost to me for this, but it is the right thing to do. I am
still
trusting God for a January launch, but will probably be toward the end
of
the month at least.
I want to thank you for your interest in Keepin' On. I am still
accepting
submissions for columns. I have determined that at this time I can pay
$25.00 for each article used. Each author will able to have his or her
picture at the head of their column, a brief bio, and a link back to an
email or URL.(All rights revert back to the author after publication in
Keepin' On.) I can fund this out of my pocket for a while, but I don't
have
buckets of money sitting around, so eventually costs will be covered by
subscriptions revenues. My goal is to be able to increase author pay as
subscriptions grow. I have decided on $12.00 for a one year
subscription.
Contributing authors will receive the magazine for free. Contributing
authors will also be asked to get the word out to their own networks to
help
build our subscription base. (Nothing pushy, just let people know.)
If you are still interested, please let me know either by email or you
can
log onto the Keepin' On yahoo group at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/keepin_on/ . I plan to send weekly
update
messages there. You can also check the website at www.keepinon.net
and
click the "update" tab.
Blessing to you all,
Jim Thomson
