I think that just as God as Creator sent us into the world with a specific mission, we as Writers and Creators should send our writing with a mission. Do you have a Writing Mission Statement? What do you want your writing to do ? I think it's kind of a given around here that we want our writing to glorify God...but what is your mission, more specifically? Do you write to entertain, teach, enlighten, inspire...what?

My mission? To build bridges. Bridges across beliefs, bridges across relationships, bridges across cultures and even great spans of time. I've been blessed with some fairly amazing experiences and -- perhaps even better -- a burgeoning ability to relate these experiences to others.
This is, of course, just one mission. The rest are still forming...

Coming up with a mission statement is a good idea in other ways. I am reading "how to write a book proposal" by Michael Larson. He suggests that many book proposals would benefit from a first person voiced mission statement enunciating your commitment to the subject you are writing about. Obviously this has to do with why you will be motivated to assist in the marketing of your book after it is published, which is important to the publisher. But it is a great way to say something about yourself and why the topic excites you.

I did not set out to be a writer. It arose out of being a Bible teacher and minister of the Gospel. So most of my writing flows out of the mission of our ministry:
"To help you take the next step of faith in your walk with the Lord, to experience the presence and power of God in your life."
Of course, we give a little more definition to that at our website (http://www.walkingbarefoot.com/mission.htm ), but that's the main filter my writing goes through. It sharpens the focus.
