I'll be honest the reason i dont do these much anymore is because i don't like short stories and when I write one i just end up wanting to make it longer and I fall in love with my characters.
I have enough people at the time that want my attention.
Just wanted you to know I wasn't ignoring you. Sounds like some good words there to use.
Good luck

My historical place is Appomattox, VA April 9,1865. I grew up 12 miles from the surrender grounds.
Over and Going Home. (445 words)
It was a black mood no one liked the idea of surrender. General Lee reluctantly made the decision I know, but I just wish there was another way.
“What’s that?” Danny was just a kid, always jumping at his own shadow.
Frederic said, “Calm down, son, it is just some little animal, hunkering down for the night.”
“I don’t know what will happen, the war’s gonna be over, and we’re in Virginia.”
“Just where do you call home anyway?”
“Shiloh, sir.”
“Tennessee, isn’t it?”
“Yes sir.”
“There’s not much left of that place son. What do you plan to do?”
“I don’t know sir the farm is gone, set to fire. We didn’t really have anyone to work for us to start with. We just struggled through as a family pulling together. I’m the only one left not. Even if the farm had not been touched I wouldn’t be able to make a go of it alone.”
Frederic got a lump in his thought and handed Danny a hunk of cheese. What is this kid supposed to do all alone? Shiloh was a union victory and there wasn’t much left but the scarred mountain. With no home and no family what could Danny do he wasn’t much more than twelve. “I come from Richmond myself. I don’t care much for what it looked like when left”
“I thought we were safe in Richmond, it being the capitol and all. We’ve just lost the war didn’t we, sir?”
“It sure looks that way, kid, sure does.”
“I saw General Lee when he rode by, he looked so sad.”
“I reckon he was, he was heading into that house down the street to give up. I’m not saying there was any choice, we have been running for days and there is no place left to go.”
“Are we going to their prison?”
“If the war is really over I guess we’ll just go home.”
“You sure they won’t put us in prison, at least there will be people there.”
“Are you sure there is none left in your family?”
“The north burned my home and I lost my mom and baby sister that way. My oldest brother went at Bull Run, my other brother at Gettysburg. Even if I make it home there is nothing or nobody there.”
“What did you think of Richmond, son?”
“Powerful big, sir.”
“You might want to go with me home since there is nothing left where you come from.”
“You mean it, sir?
“Sure son, nobody needs to be alone.”
