Jack wrapped his arms around his wife’s waist and whispered in her ear. “So, Lily, are you ready to blow this Popsicle stand?”

“Definitely. You know the only reason I’m here is because I’m the matron of honor.”

“I know. You hate weddings.”

“More than funerals.” Lily giggled. “At least I did my duty and we can leave for vacation guilt-free. Now go get our coats. Hurry.”

Jack headed toward the coat check, but Lily grabbed his hand and pulled him close. “Let me know if you find something in your pocket.”

He raised a questioning eyebrow. Lily gently pushed him away and turned back to the crowd.

When the girl behind the counter handed him the coats, he tossed Lily’s faux fur over his shoulder and eagerly checked every pocket of the black overcoat. Deep in the inside pocket he discovered a handwritten note on scented stationary. Jack stepped back into a corner and read the elegant script by candlelight:

My dearest love,

I would be lost without you. Tonight at midnight, we will enter the arena of love. You are my matador, my conquistador.

I am yours forever.

Roger shoved the note into his pocket and hurried back to his wife with a grin on his face.

“Your conquistador has returned,” he whispered as he helped her into her coat.

“What?”

“Your conquistador. You know, your matador.” He snapped his fingers and clicked his heels.

“How much have you been drinking?”

“The note. I’m talking about the note.” Roger pulled the note out and showed it to Lily.

She laughed. “I didn’t write that.”

“Well, who did?”

“Maybe the wife of the guy who owns that coat.” Lily held the coat open, inspecting the inside of it a little closer.

“This isn’t my coat?”

“No.” Lily laughed again.

“Come on.” Roger grabbed Lily’s hand and towed her to the coat check.

A few minutes later they stood on the curb at the valet stand. Roger handed his ticket to the valet.

“You can’t miss it. It’s a white Chevy Trailblazer with a Jesus fish.”

After the valet left, he turned to Lily. “That’s so embarrassing. I feel like I was reading someone else’s mail.”

“Well, at least we’ll never know who it was.”

“Never know what, dear?”

“Oh, hey, Mom,” Lily said. Now her mother and father stood at the valet stand, too. “Are you leaving so soon?”

“Yeah, your Dad’s tired. It’s been a long day.”

The valet pulled up in a silver Mercedes.

“Well, we’ll see you when we get back vacation.”

“Okay, dear. Kisses!”

As they drove off, Lily and Roger noticed the vanity plate:

Nightshade and Piper

Parker snuck into the room, and saw the coat he was looking for. He slipped in the note. It read Midnight at the arena you will find the lost soul of the night. Piper. The code names were his life. He just wished for once he could use his real name. Find someone he could trust with his secret.

Nicole placed her coat down and received the ticket. She slipped in and changed her ticket number for the only long coat in there. She hoped her cover hadn’t been blown. She knew her violet eyes could give her away. It was the only clue to her identity.

Slipping out she received a long coat. She placed her hand in the pocket. She felt the note. She read it in the light of the streetlight. In the coat she looked for her gloves, they weren’t in the pocket. After all this planning she had the wrong coat. But how did he know that she would receive the wrong coat?

Nicole tousled her short black hair. Dark hair and violet eyes the two characteristics that Nightshade was known for. This was going to be her last job. She wanted to settle down, able to take vacations.

She entered the arena. She saw a man skating on the ice with smooth movements. She moved to the locker and received her skates. Her boss wanted her to meet Piper and skate with him for a competition. That was the only way they could get into the special area to receive the payment for the document she had been guarding for years.

She would know this was Piper was if she recognised the music. She didn’t take her eyes off the skater. Was he the lost soul of the night? Nicole heard the music start. Nicole skated to his side.

Piper and Nightshade moved as if they had always been skating together. At the end of the piece their faces were inches apart. Breathing heavy ,Parker took the chance, and kissed Nightshade.

The kiss wasn’t brief and Nicole struggled. Parker whispered against her lips, “don’t struggle Nightshade I think we might have company.”

Nicole saw a man standing by the side of the rink. “Can I help you?” Piper said.

“Nightshade and Piper I presume.” The hand in his pocket looked like it was holding a gun.

Parker hoped Nightshade hadn’t showed any recognition. “I’m Parker.”

“Nicole. Are you are a skater?”

“No, just enjoyed your performance. Thank you.” He walked away, without a backward glance. Nicole saw him get into a red Chevy and drive off.

Parker turned and said. “Nice to meet you Nightshade.”

“And you Piper, the lost soul.”

“And are you lost Nightshade? I was until I found Jesus.”

“Not many Christians in our business, but it is nice to find a believer.”

“Time to go, do you want to come and meet my dog Jack?”

Nightshade laughed, “Ok.” The kiss had been very nice.
THE END

Chevy's Acapulco Vacation

Word count: 498

Acapulco, Jack had said. If you want a superb vacation, go to Acapulco. Chevy took his advice, assigned the continuing research on the sports arena to her substitute and booked a flight to Acapulco. Well, it wasn't turning out to be superb.

Chevy decided to give it one last chance. The party tonight, the tour guide assured his group, would be fantastic: good food, great music, a chance to mingle with other tourists and local dignitaries.

She glanced around the crowded room, ill-at-ease, and decided to leave. She went to the hat check girl to retrieve her jacket, but the girl wasn't there. A man dressed in the garb of a waiter was pawing through the few wraps hanging behind the counter.

Chevy cleared her throat and he whirled around, a frown puckering his forehead. When he caught sight of her, he smoothed his face and smiled. The smile stretched his lips but didn't reach his eyes, which were as dark and glittering as polished obsidian.

“May I help you?” he asked in an overpowering accent, carefully enunciating each word.

She looked at his name tag: Jesus Martinez, and proffered her claim ticket. “I need my jacket, please.”

The night seemed empty and dark as she strolled to the patio. She thrust her hands into the pocket of her jacket and felt an envelope. Hmmm. Strange. She didn't remember having placed an envelope in her pocket. Chevy crossed the patio to a gaslight and looked at the envelope. Nothing was written on it and the flap had been torn open.

She pulled two pieces of paper from it. One was a photograph of herself. The other was folded sheet of paper. She unfolded it and read the message:

If we don't stop this arena deal, we're lost. Disable the head honcho on the project here, away from her home turf. Do it by midnight and ten thousand will be delivered, like always.

Her sharp intake of breath was the loudest sound on the patio as the note slipped from her numb fingers and floated to the flagstone paving. Unconsciously, she gripped the lapels of her wrap to pull it closer against the sudden inner chill.

Wait! That's strange....

She felt the lapels. Smooth. Her jacket had black embroidered designs, black on black. She slipped the jacket from her shoulders and looked closely at it. It wasn't hers. Someone else had read the note first and put it into the pocket. But who?

A woman dressed in a red gown approached from the open door. “Excuse me. I think you have my jacket.”

Chevy's eyes narrowed. The would-be assassin. She glanced around. The patio was deserted. When the woman drew near, Chevy tripped her, knelt and banged the woman's head on the stone floor and rolled her into the swimming pool. Then she stood, a grim smile of triumph stretching her lips.

Disable ME! she thought.

And felt a wire slip around her neck from behind.

Oh, my gosh, Tommie. Yours was too good. It caught me off guard.

Don't get me wrong, the others were good, too, but I didn't see that one coming. I don't think I'll be going to Acalpulco anytime soon.

Great job guys now I guess it's my turn.

Joe wasn't sure what happened. There was a note in her pocket that she knew wasn't for her. After she looked closer she realized it wasn't her coat. She went out to the bus stop and took out the note and read it.

'You need to meet your contact a little past Midnight at the Green Cricket across from the Bay Street Arena. You must warn him not to speak to the Wolf she doesn't have your best interest at heart. Your pass word is Kissimmee.'

Joe knew it wasn't the smartest thing she ever did but she got on the bus and headed to the west side of town to the address. She prayed as she went, Lord Jesus help me, but I feel as if I should go stand in for this young woman.

Jack knew it was time for his vacation, he was supposed to be on his way to Vegas but instead he was in his old Chevy S-10 going to the Green Cricket. He was supposed to meet a woman named Toni there, he was supposed to brief her than the Wolf would come and take her to the safe house.

Jack didn't know what this Toni looked like but when the young woman came walking in and she looked out of place he knew it had to be her. He looked up and smiled at her and she came over. She was so nervous that she mis spoke but the young man knew what she meant and he only smiled when she said "The pass word is Kiss Me."
